Michael Chopra, a former striker for Newcastle United, talked about his “really bad” gambling moments.

During their time at Newcastle United, Michael Chopra has disclosed that only Kieron Dyer prevented him from placing a £120,000 wager.

Over the years, Chopra has been transparent about his struggle with a gambling addiction in an effort to assist others and spread awareness. The former Sporting Chance Clinic patient, Geordie, had previously calculated his betting losses to have reached up to £2 million.

When Chopra reflected on his “extremely bad” gambling days, he stated he had a £50,000 limit with a bookmaker that Dyer used, and the former striker for Newcastle had persuaded his team-mate to bet £120,000 on Juventus to win a match.

“He said, ‘I’m not doing it,'” Recalled to the Central Club was Chopra. “I told them to put it on. ‘I can’t do anything for you,’ he replied. You will owe £170,000 if they lose.

“Juventus prevailed. “That would have cleared the balance on my debt,” I replied as I walked in. However, he wasn’t really betting on me; rather, he was watching out for me.

“Kieron informed [Alan] Shearer that I believe Chops has a gambling issue since we had the same agent. I’ve been asked to do this and that by him. This is what he owes my bookmaker. Is it possible for you to talk to and chat with your agent? There was £50,000 that I owed the bookmaker. Each participant would be assigned a unique limit that would be paid off at the conclusion of each month.

“At Newcastle, my weekly salary was a mere £2,000. You go after it. It did not help that when you’re seventeen and flying to Malaysia for pre-season and all the guys are playing three-card brag with forty or fifty thousand pounds in fifty fifties on the table, you’re watching it. You’re thinking, ‘It’s simply the cards that have luck.” You may win £50,000 if you hold the best hand and three threes. I think I became hooked to it because of little things like that.”
