This BBC Sport expert made some insightful remarks on Newcastle United.
Speaking ahead of the match against Fulham on Saturday afternoon is Chris Sutton.
With a win at Craven Cottage, Eddie Howe and his team would move Newcastle United to the top of the standings.
One point in front of Manchester City and three ahead of Arsenal before to their Sunday encounter at the Etihad Stadium.
So, is this time the BBC Sport guy getting it right?
Chris Sutton in an interview with BBC Sport, September 19, 2024:
“Out of their 19 home Premier League games last season, Fulham won nine and lost eight, but I always thought they would win at Craven Cottage.
“They should have defeated West Ham there last weekend, as they had opportunities to take the lead before Danny Ings gave the Hammers an equalizer in the 95th minute.”
I haven’t been really thrilled with Newcastle thus far, so they’re still a bit of an unknown to me.
Eddie Howe’s team may eventually falter, but for the time being at least, they are managing to win games while depending more on individual players’ flashes of brilliance than on cohesive play.
They are the team that is most difficult to anticipate since, last week, I had Fulham drawn 1-1 just as I had predicted. Thus, I’m aiming for the same result. despite the fact that I think they will win this one more than Newcastle.
“Guess: Fulham 1, Newcastle 1.”
What then should we make of the BBC Sport man’s remarks?
Chris Sutton believes that Newcastle United will eventually falter; the question is not if, but when.
It is true that all teams, including Manchester City, will experience defeat at some point; even the greatest ones.
Does this mean that Newcastle United will lose soon—maybe this Saturday?
I would think Fulham and Wolves are rather similar.
Wins away from home against these teams can be the difference between winning and losing, but if you want to finish in the top four and earn a spot in the Champions League, you must at least draw with them.
In relation to triumphing away from home…
Newcastle United has won each of their past five trips to Craven Cottage (in all competitions).
Over the last eight and a half months, Newcastle United has won ten, drawn one, and lost only five of its sixteen away games (across all competitions) since New Year’s Day.
When Newcastle United played Wolves last Saturday, the BBC Sport analyst predicted the same outcome and scoreline. Even though Newcastle wasn’t playing at their best, they still had more possession, more shots, more shots on goal, and more corners than the home team. It was two incredible long-range goals that ultimately decided the game at Molineux.
Chris Sutton claims that Newcastle United will eventually “come a cropper.” In my opinion, however, it is only a matter of time until United truly finds their game and plays well for the majority of many games, as opposed to just brief spurts like the first 20 minutes of Saturday’s game and the same period of time in the second half when the two goals were scored.
