Newcastle United fell to their first defeat of the season on Saturday as Fulham brushed the Magpies aside with a comprehensive 3-1 win.

As they have been all season, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle were still well behind the pace, but this time a valiant recovery was not in the cards.

After Harvey Barnes’ strike to tie the score at two minutes into the second half, things appeared to be improving, but despite Newcastle’s dominance, a second goal never seemed realistic.

That was until Fabian Schar took advantage of a careless pass from behind to give himself a great chance to tie the score, only to miss by an inch.

Nick Pope was at fault for the second goal but also kept Newcastle in it

Emile Smith Rowe had previously struck the bar, but Nick Pope’s weak hands in the first half were made up for with some outstanding stops that allowed his meek attempt to reach the bottom corner and make it 2-0.

Despite the fact that Pope’s knees stopped an attempt by Alex Iwobi, the goalkeeper was mostly unaware of it.

The hosts appeared to have the best chance of scoring again, and in stoppage time, they did just that when Bruno Guimaraes, the captain of Newcastle, sent a wonderful pass across the 18-yard box and it dropped to Reiss Nelson, who happily took the gift to make it 3-1.

Bruno’s error led to Fulham’s third goal in stoppage time

We had to double-take to be sure it was really Bruno because the ball was so unlike him.

Following the match, the captain apologized on Instagram for both his own mistake and his colleagues’ shortcomings, pledging to make amends.

“I’m a man enough to take responsibility for my errors. A difficult day for everyone. But I’m not going to hide! Both individually and as a team, we need to get better, and I fully support that. Go on to create brighter days in the future.
