Paul Mitchell, the sports director of Newcastle United, has met often with several departments.
Even if there has been more speculation of political turmoil at St James’ Park, Newcastle United’s sports director Paul Mitchell has the complete support of the team’s Saudi owners PIF.
The goal of Mitchell’s team, which also includes CEO Darren Eales, performance director James Bunce, and commercial head Peter Silverstone, is to close the gap on the top five Premier League teams and address long-term problems that PIF invested in in 2021. The team denied a rumor that surfaced on Sunday and was picked up by aggregators, claiming that if the internal power struggle persisted, Mitchell would quit the team ahead of Eddie Howe.
But the top brass’s message is that Howe should collaborate closely with Mitchell and the management staff, according to Newcastle executives. After the transfer window, the head coach said he had not talked to Mitchell and that he had instead spoken with a “senior board member” on Friday.
Following the transfer window, Mitchell has continued to work on enhancing other aspects of the team and has spoken often with Academy director Steve Harper. Diarmuid O’Carroll, a coach from St. Mirren, is likely to confirm his presence at United to oversee the Under-21s and reserve squad.
Following his declaration in public that the recruiting section was “unfit for purpose,” Mitchell has also had lengthy discussions with the scouting department. According to sources in Newcastle who spoke with Chronicle Live, he has thus far had “very good” connection with the club’s scouts.
Furthermore, Mitchell has extended the contract of Becky Langley, the manager of the NUFC Women’s squad. Langley has been with the team for a long time, and on Sunday, following their 2-0 victory against Sheff United at Kingston Park, she acknowledged that she talks to the former sports director of Monaco almost every day. According to a Sunday broadcast from The Magpie Channel TV, Langley discussed her discussions with Mitchell following his appointment.
Mitchell and Eales saw the NUFC Women’s team beat the Blades on Sunday afternoon, less than twenty-four hours after suffering a 3-1 loss at Fulham.
Under Mitchell, United’s immediate goal is to make sure that the January window has a solid list of objectives. Scouts are starting to watch games under the new framework, and Mitchell is keen to ensure that Howe has the best possible list of possibilities for the winter trade window.
Howe’s summer window budget of just £15 million was spent on William Osula, and no new players were added during the January trade window. While contract decisions are being finalized, Newcastle may decide to offload high earners like Kieran Trippier in the upcoming window.
The existing contracts of Sean Longstaff, Dan Burn, Callum Wilson, Emil Krafth, Martin Dubravka, Jamaal Lascelles, and Mark Gillespie will expire. During his most recent press conference, Howe indicated that he intended to hang onto Longstaff while stressing the risk of losing players for free if new contracts weren’t assigned. However, he also mentioned that a squad makeover may take place in the summer of 2025.
After the Magpies missed out on Europe last summer, Howe had asked for extensions for Paul Dummett and Matt Ritchie, but club executives had rejected him.
