The Carabao Cup third-round match between Newcastle United and AFC Wimbledon is scheduled to be rescheduled.
The match will need to be rescheduled for a later time due to flooding in the area surrounding Plough Lane. Tuesday night was scheduled to see the tie start at 7:45 p.m.

This means that, on Wednesday night, following Liverpool’s match against West Ham United, both Wimbledon and Newcastle will be in the hat for the round of sixteen.

Social media users have posted footage of water in and around the stadium as well as a “sinkhole” in the field, which has been declared unplayable in advance of a formal declaration.

Newcastle anticipates that the game will be postponed; a formal notification and further information will be provided when available.

The match must be rescheduled for the “earliest possible opportunity,” according to the official EFL regulations. Wimbledon might face a scheduling backlog if their next two League Two games, which were scheduled to take place at Plough Lane, are called into question.

According to the rules, “The Management Committee shall use its reasonable endeavours to rearrange the fixture for the earliest reasonable opportunity (including but not limited to arranging for the Competition Match to be played at a neutral venue) which will not be later than the date of the first Competition Match scheduled to take place in the iatch for any reason.”

The week of October 28 will see the start of the fourth round of ties; in the meantime, there will be an international break. However, the rules provide that Newcastle will get a bye to the fourth round if Wimbledon is unable to complete the match.

The following is added to the rules: “The Management Committee may ammediately following round if a Club is unable to fulfil its obligation to complete a Competition Mnnounce that the Competition Match will be abandoned if it determines that it cannot be rescheduled.

“The Club shall forfeit the Competition Match, pay the opposing Club’s expenses in compliance with Rule 5.6, and the opposing Club shall receive a bye into the next round of the Competition where the Management Committee declares that the Competition Match shall be abandoned.”

Newcastle advanced to the Carabao Cup final in 2023 and the quarterfinals the previous year. We’ll provide further information and a formal announcement on the Wimbledon match later on.
