Just months before he joined the Light Blues, former Rangers striker Ross McCormack disclosed that he participated in the Parkhead pitch invasion when Celtic prevented the Ibrox team from winning ten straight games.
When McCormack was a youngster, Alex McLeish gave him his Rangers debut. He also scored a historic equalizer against Porto in a Champions League match. McCormack got his breakthrough with Rangers. However, the 38-year-old talked about his early loyalty to the Hoops before signing a contract in Govan. When he went for a trial at the age of eight, Celtic scouts told him he was “too small.” The former forward, who went for enormous money in moves in England to Leeds United, Fulham, and Aston Villa, revealed that he chose the “next best thing” and moved to Rangers.
During an interview with Paul Slane and Simon Ferry on the Open Goal podcast, McCormack acknowledged being a Celtics supporter. I owned a season pass. The last time we used our season ticket was against St Johnstone at home, where Celtic prevented Rangers from winning ten straight games. Scorers were (Harald) Brattbakk and (Henrik) Larsson.
“During the pitch invasion at Parkhead, I was on the field following the game, taking grass and putting it in my pocket. When I started working full-time (with Rangers), I was fifteen.
“I went for a trial (with Celtic) up at St Roch’s when I was eight years old, and I believe they told me I was too tiny. In essence, that implies that you’re s****. It’s not what they desire. I ultimately chose to attend Rangers.
“My father could have advised waiting to see whether Celtic entered the game if the Rangers had entered first. However, because I had already been rejected, I decided to move on to the next best thing. I went full-time a few months after that, so that was my final game as a season ticket holder.
Having joined Motherwell later in his career, McCormack replaced current Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta for his debut. His first goal came in a 3-2 victory against Dunfermline while wearing the boots of BORROW star striker Michael Mols.
He gave an explanation, saying, “I was not allowed to wear studs on that 3G pitch while we were away in Dunfermline. I only had studs.” Michael Mols had to give them to me, then! I had on the boots of Michael Mols! ‘Listen, Ross has just got studs, is there any chance because you’re the same size, do you have any boots?’ Jimmy Bell most likely remarked to him.
