Newcastle United young defender Miodrag Pivas is yet to make his Willem II debut because of a work permit issue.
After signing the 19-year-old for a little cost in the summer from FK Jedinstvo Ub, a top-tier Serbian team, the Magpies loaned him to Willem for the duration of the campaign.
Pivas finalized his move on September 2, but he was unable to immediately join the Dutch club. Instead, he had to report to the embassy in Belgrade to finish certain visa-related paperwork. Since Serbia is not a member of the EU, players planning to stay in the Netherlands for more than three months must get a GVVA.
This meant that Pivas would not be able to train with his new team for the first several weeks while he was waiting for a visa.
Thankfully, the center back has now been given the go-ahead by the appropriate authorities, and last Thursday, he finally connected with Willem. Close sources at the Eredivisie club anticipate Pivas’s debut early next month.
Pivas was absent from Willem’s trip to FC Utrecht last weekend and will not play on Saturday against PSV Eindhoven as he recovers from an injury. He’s already made appearances for the under-21 team.
Pivas stated on the transfer, “I have to train and play minutes at the highest level for my development.” Willem II has a reputation for giving up on inexperienced players. My ultimate objective is to play in the Premier League, therefore I hope to be able to acquire experience here.
Pivas started his career with Austrian provincial teams UFC Siezenheim and SV Grodig before moving back to his home country with Jedinstvo in 2023. Pivas was born in Novi Sad, which is located to the northwest of Belgrade, the capital of Serbia.
Nemanja Matic, a former midfielder for Chelsea and Manchester United, recently gave Pivas a great assessment, drawing comparisons between him and Branislav Ivanovic and Nemanja Vidic.
