The Carolina Panthers’ victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday was devastating for a number of reasons. One of those was due to Marcus Epps, a starting safety for the Raiders, suffering an ACL tear that kept him out of action for the remainder of the season. A secondary that was already lacking depth before into the season became much more so with Epps out for the entire year. In keeping with that, the Raiders added practice squad cornerback Sam Webb to the active roster in a commensurate move.
For the Raiders, the loss of Epps is significant, and Webb will have huge shoes to fill. Epps has started every game for the squad since signing before of the 2023 campaign. Though he hasn’t been among the league’s finest safety, he did a good job of supporting the unit’s back line while he was there by being a constant threat to passes as well as runs.
Still, Webb is a face the Raiders are familiar with. He joined with the team in 2022 as an undrafted free agent, and he has since made a few appearances.
During his first season, Webb played in every game (17 games total), one in 2023, and three in 2024. Webb has only started three games in his career, all in 2022, and has spent the most of his time as a reserve. He has made 338 plays on the field and has recorded 37 tackles in addition to three passes defensed. When targeted, he has given up one touchdown, a completion percentage of 70.5%, and a passer rating of 100.3.
