Various rules were implemented to ensure the safety of NBA players during the COVID-19 epidemic, particularly in the 2021–2022 season. Although the majority of players in the league had received vaccinations, there were still regulations in place for those who had not.
Unvaccinated players were not allowed to dine in the same room as other players or personnel, and their lockers were positioned at a considerable distance from teammates who had received vaccinations. The requirements even said that players who were not vaccinated had to be “required to remain at their residence when in their home market” and stay on the hotel’s grounds if traveling. The NBA claims that at this point, over 90% of the league was vaccinated, and those who were not faced challenges as a result of these restrictions.
Kyrie Irving, the most well-known player who was not vaccinated, had stricter requirements in New York than in any other state since he was a Brooklyn Nets player. Because to his unwillingness to be immunized and the laws that were in place in New York City, Irving was unable to participate in home games at the Barclays Center for the most of the 2021–2022 season. Irving was disappointed because he wanted to be on the court with his Nets teammates.

At the time, Irving’s choice to forego the vaccination sparked controversy. He recently discussed the matter when a video of Jay Varma, the former public health adviser for New York City, went viral and made fun of Irving’s inability to play because he was ultimately responsible for the decision “that blocked (him) from playing basketball.”
After after, a video of Irving discussing how he had to accept that he couldn’t play because of a mandate was played.
Irving’s response to this X video perfectly captures his feelings on the whole situation.
Irving said, “The truth is always revealed in the light.”
Irving was taken aback by Varma’s tone when he talked about his choice to not receive the vaccination, as he had no idea that it would prevent him from playing at all.
Irving is totally focused on winning in Dallas and has moved over the whole COVID incident that prevented him from participating in a lot of home games back in 2021 and 2022. Irving’s obvious attention has completely switched to being the best player on the court, and he and Luka Doncic have become one of the finest teams in the NBA.
Since joining the Mavericks, there haven’t been any off-court problems, and his presence in Dallas appears to be a match made in heaven for all parties. Irving can be himself with the Mavs in every aspect, and their collaboration has brought forth the best in him. He clearly likes playing for the Mavericks, and Dallas’s successful postseason run last year was greatly aided by his leadership.
Irving has been clear of controversy for a while now, and this statement from him should help close that chapter of his career.
