The reason for Eddie Howe’s double replacement of Kieran Trippier and Sandro Tonali in the last moments of Newcastle United’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City has been revealed.
Josko Gvardiol’s first goal of the first half was cancelled out by Anthony Gordon’s penalty, and then Howe took Trippier and Tonali off the field. As Newcastle grabbed a well-deserved point at St James’ Park, both players hobbled off, and Tonali was seen sitting on the bench with an ice pack on his knee.
Howe, who was unsure about Trippier’s status after the game, was able to confirm after the game that Tonali’s withdrawal was caused by cramps.
Howe conceded, “I think that’s really how you want a player to exit the pitch.” This week and previous week were different, in my opinion, since both players had given it their all and had to step away. I tell the players that’s how I want them to play.
“Both athletes had difficult preseasons for various reasons. Sandro still has more fitness work to do to reach his peak, as you can see. Kieran appears to be experiencing cramps, but we’re not positive just yet.
“But both players put on really strong performances.”
Newcastle held the Premier League leaders to a draw at St. James’ Park after suffering a depressing 3-1 loss at Fulham.
Howe gave this assessment of his team’s performance: “I felt we played pretty well in both halves. Though I believe we were gutsy and determined, I also believe that we were able to get close to Manchester City, who are a very tough team to press high up the pitch.
Anthony Gordon, in my opinion, personified that fierce energy and will. I found the job he completed to be quite outstanding. His impressive long-distance runs, in my opinion, demonstrated that he’s returning to peak physical condition.
I was quite happy with him, and the club supported me. However, it’s not an easy task to follow my advice since Man City is a very skilled team. However, I considered every man to be. You did a great job on your shift today.
I felt that today’s game was excellent. Without a question, both with and without the ball, I felt that was our greatest performance of the season. I also thought it was a really intriguing tactical move. Additionally, it was arguably our most competitive matchup with Manchester City.
Even in the 3–3 tie, I think we were somewhat more in control of the game today than we were in that one. Very encouraging indicators for us.
