The great Gary Neville of Manchester United has outlined the reasons why Gareth Southgate shouldn’t be named Erik ten Hag’s replacement by the Premier League’s biggest clubs.
Prior to Man Utd’s Europa League match against Porto and their Sunday trip to Aston Villa, the Dutchman is under a great deal of strain.
Ten Hag is the frontrunner to be the next Premier League manager fired following Manchester United’s humiliating 3-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur this past weekend.
Considering how hard the Red Devils had to work to finish eighth in the Premier League, the head coach was lucky to still have his job at the end of the previous campaign.
Ten Hag’s career was spared by United’s victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley, but his team’s dismal start to the new season has him on the ropes.
Man Utd is being connected to multiple possible Ten Hag replacements after losing three of their first six Premier League games of the 2024–25 season.
Southgate, who resigned from England after England’s defeat by Spain in the Euro 2024 final, was one of the managers connected to Manchester United in the summer.
According to a story from earlier this week, Southgate is on United’s short list of potential Ten Hag replacements.
Neville has however clarified why Southgate would “come into Man Utd with scepticism,” making this not the “most exciting appointment.”
On the It’s Called Soccer podcast, Neville stated, “I said last season, I’ve never seen Gareth as a fit for Manchester United or Manchester United to be a fit for Gareth.”
“I’ve never thought that the team or Manchester United would take such action. The only similarity I can find is that Gareth and (sporting director) Dan Ashworth have collaborated, and Gareth has performed admirably with England.
