The rising discussion of a new stadium has caused the Magpies to postpone their announcement about St James’ Park until January.
Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle United, has expressed his opinion over the possibility of leaving St James’ Park.
Brad Miller, the chief operating officer, said on Thursday that no decisions have been made about the feasibility study thus far, and that the next milestone will determine what may or may not happen in January. Only a few weeks had passed since Miller had promised “imminent” word on the next move.
Although supporters have expressed a wish to stay at St. James’ Park in the past, their opinions have recently changed as a result of the club’s dire PSR problems, which suggest a larger venue is needed for the future.
“Well, I think it’s a difficult one for someone like myself when people want to know my opinion – but I’m not faced with all the facts,” Howe stated at his news conference today. I’m not really hearing the advantages and disadvantages of every choice. I suppose staying in St. James’ Park is just in my nature. It’s a great spot to play football.
It serves as our house. Therefore, it feels a little bit like a betrayal to consider relocating somewhere else when it has served us so well.”
Newcastle had to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh over the summer because they risked losing points due to PSR regulations in the Premier League. Howe said looking at the situation from a financial point of view shows that the wisest solution may be to quit.
“People with more brain cells [than me] will make the decision for the benefit of the long term future of the football club – and that’s always the most important thing,” he continued. “We are well aware that as a football club, we need to increase our revenue.”
“So I could be swayed, but I feel my natural instinct is to want to stay.”
Miller has previously stated that the club only wants to write “one cheque” and that the next choice will be a “once in a lifetime” transfer. “This is an exciting but extremely complex project, and I’d like to thank supporters for their patience as we conduct this key phase of the feasibility process,” the COO said this week at a Fan Advisory Board meeting.
“Although we haven’t reached the decision-making stage yet, we want to finish the remaining crucial tasks by the first half of 2025. We are a few steps closer to realizing our vision for a revitalized St. James’ Park, and we now possess a substantial quantity of data and comments on the stadium’s footprint and surrounding area.
