Erik ten Hag will be aware that Manchester United’s walls are closing in quickly. Ten Hag was lucky to preserve his job in the summer after winning the FA Cup, but if United loses to Aston Villa on Sunday, good fortune won’t save him from being fired. Midweek’s tumultuous 3-3 tie between United and FC Porto served as further evidence that his tenure is officially over. Ten Hag has failed to address his team’s propensity to let up a comfortable two-goal lead, and his shocking choice to replace Marcus Rashford because of “rotation” was uncalled for.

Rashford was excellent in the first half, scoring the opening goal, and was removed at the halftime. His departure indicated Ten Hag has lost the plot and he is obviously now a manager on the brink.
