Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle United, acknowledges that Joelinton’s disciplinary history is a necessary component of his status as a midfield “destroyer.”
Joelinton, the Magpies’ opponent this evening at Goodison Park (kickoff at 5:30 p.m.), is only one yellow card away from a one-match Premier League suspension.
Four of United’s first six league games have seen the Brazilian given a warning; the most recent one was during last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City due to a foul on Erling Haaland. Any player who received five yellow cards in the first 19 league games is subject to a one-match ban under Premier League regulations.
Joelinton would have to remain out of the referee’s book until the trip to Tottenham Hotspur on January 4 in order to escape that. A suspension in the near future seems evitable but Howe is relatively tolerant of the situation.
Howe stated to NewcastleWorld: “I think you have to accept it to some extent, but you can’t have a player who is a destroyer, ball-winner, expert at second balls, duels, and tackles and not accept that sometimes he will mistime tackles and sometimes he will be given a yellow card. You cannot be in two places at once.
“You can’t have it both ways, of course, but we will try to help him a little bit and we don’t want to lose him to suspension.”
Joelinton was suspended for one game for five bookings and two games for ten yellow cards during the 2022–2023 season.
Howe responded, “Yeah, I’ve had a lot of conversations with Joe on various topics, and that will be one part of it.”
“It’s too early in the season to miss a player due to suspension, so he needs to handle what he can control. We don’t want to miss him. Losing him is always really difficult.
“There are a lot of other ones that we need to get rid of from him, but sometimes with a tackle you can be a second late and you have to sort of accept that.”
