Newcastle United’s lack of quality in the last part of their match against Everton was criticized by Alan Shearer.
The team led by Eddie Howe ended their final visit to Goodison Park with a goalless draw. Jordan Pickford saved Anthony Gordon’s penalty in the first half, and the player and his teammates squandered a number of further opportunities to end the tie.
Shearer thinks the Magpies could have won if they hadn’t been missing Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak, their attackers.
Shearer stated Match of the Day, “They were awful in the final third today.” “They got into the final third with some pretty brilliant football play, but their last pass or finish was terrible.
“Despite having very mid-table attacking numbers, they are sixth in the league.” In the previous two games, neither [Alexander] Isak nor [Callum] Wilson had played. If they want to raise those numbers, they must get Isak fit.
James Tarkowski hauled Sandro Tonali to the ground, earning Gordon a penalty. At first, play continued unhindered, but referee Craig Pawson was ordered to the pitchside monitor by VAR.
The Toffees had their own penalty request rejected down in the second half when Dominic Calvert-Lewin went to ground following a collision with Dan Burn.
The judgment made by Pawson on the pitch was upheld by VAR, which confused manager Sean Dyche.
“I believe it’s an odd one,” Dyche remarked. “You can’t do that; their consequence is a little to-ing and fro-ing.
I see so many poor penalties in ours, the thing I can’t figure out, and then you see that. It’s obvious that he attempted to snag the ball at goal. Their boy, I doubt he can even get there, and he stops him aiming for the goal—let’s pretend he’s going to score.
They give it no attention at all. At the very least, glance at it. You are aware of our dismal track record when it comes to penalties. Why isn’t it a foul if everyone in the crowd believes it to be one if it occurs in the center of the pitch? Every time we ask the higher powers, they respond with a technical explanation.
“It feels similar to when you give someone a shoulder tap and their legs tremble.” Who knows because we are immune to penalties?
Shearer, though, thinks the choice was made correctly.
Shearer said, “The only thing I would add to that one is that Dan Burn doesn’t try to tackle or get in his [Calvert-Lewin’s] way.” Calvert-Lewin then kicks him in the back, but it’s one of those that, once granted, cannot be revoked.
They won’t turn around since he refused to give it to them. No, I didn’t believe it to be a punishment.
