The announcement has been made that Jurgen Klopp, the former manager of Liverpool, would lead Red Bull’s worldwide football operations.
Five months after leaving Anfield, the German has moved on to manage their global portfolio in a new position. Red Bull owns five teams: the New York Red Bulls, RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg, and teams in Europe and the Americas.
They also bought a minority stake in Leeds United earlier this year – a possible conflict of interest with Klopp’s Liverpool promise. The 57-year-old vowed to never manage another English club following his departure in May. Klopp’s new role sees him take up a position similar to Newcastle United sporting Director Paul Mitchell’s former job. The Toon chief served as technical director for Red Bull’s sporting division before joining Monaco in 2020.
Speaking upon his hiring, Klopp expressed satisfaction with his return to football but in a new role. He declared: “I am really delighted to be working on a project like this after spending nearly 25 years on the sidelines. My love for football and the individuals who contribute to the game’s uniqueness has not diminished, despite the role changing.”
His visit was also greeted by Oliver Mintzlaff, the CEO of corporate initiatives and investments at the corporation. It is yet unknown if Klopp, who has been connected to the open England position in recent weeks, has officially hung up his management hat.
“Jurgen Klopp is one of the greatest and most influential figures in world football with extraordinary skills and charisma,” he stated. “In his role as head of football, he will be a game-changer for our involvement in international football and its continued development.”
