Sydney Roosters star halfback, Sam Walker, has undergone a second surgery while in recovery from a ruptured ACL sustained during Round 26 of the NRL season against the Canberra Raiders. This injury had already ended his season and dashed his hopes of playing in the finals.
In a further setback, Walker has now had shoulder surgery to address issues that have plagued him over the past 12 months. The Roosters have opted for this procedure while Walker remains sidelined, aiming to ensure he is fully fit upon his return to the field.
Walker’s recovery from the ACL injury is expected to keep him out for the first half of the 2025 season, with a standard recovery timeline of 9 to 12 months. However, the additional shoulder surgery will not impact his return schedule.
During his absence, new recruit Chad Townsend is expected to take over the number seven role, while Sandon Smith will shift into five-eighth. Smith, who filled in at halfback during Walker’s absence, is seen as a long-term fit in the number six jersey, particularly with Luke Keary departing for the English Super League.
Walker’s return is eagerly anticipated as the Roosters look to rebuild after a challenging 2024 season. With key personnel changes and Walker’s eventual return, the team is hoping for a stronger 2025 campaign.
