Cochrane’s very own Justin Sambu made a name for himself in the CFL, debuting with an explosive performance for the Calgary Stampeders on August 4. The former Cochrane Cobras standout wasted no time announcing his arrival, recording his first sack just 3 minutes and 48 seconds into the game. His contributions helped the Stampeders mount a thrilling fourth-quarter comeback, ultimately defeating the Toronto Argonauts 27-23.

The 25-year-old defensive lineman, standing 6’4″ and weighing 282 pounds, was instrumental in a defense that recorded six sacks and shut down the Argos in the second half. “I’ve been waiting a long time to get my pro career started,” Sambu shared. “I was aiming for the NFL, but I’m thrilled to start my CFL career like this. It’s a blessing.”

Sambu’s journey has been anything but typical. A star at Cochrane High School, where he won three provincial championships, he later went on to play for the Calgary Colts juniors and spent a season in Mississauga, Ontario, where he participated in American football. His talents eventually took him to the University of Maine before he transferred to Baylor University in Texas, wrapping up a successful NCAA career.

Despite being drafted 54th overall by the Argonauts in the 2024 CFL Draft, Sambu was released during the pre-season. However, he didn’t let that deter him. “I kept working out and knew my opportunity would come,” said Sambu. His patience paid off when the Stampeders signed him in mid-July, and he made his way to the practice squad before being activated for Sunday’s game.

The Stampeders’ coaches, impressed by his relentless drive and athleticism, gave him the chance he had been waiting for. Sambu didn’t disappoint, delivering a standout performance against the very team that had let him go. “Leading up to the game, it felt personal,” Sambu admitted. “But once I was on the field and saw my old coach and teammates, I realized the CFL is like one big family.”

The personal nature of the game extended to the stands, where Sambu’s family, friends, and former teammates from Cochrane and Calgary were in attendance. “It was amazing,” Sambu said. “After the game, people I hadn’t seen in years were messaging me, saying they were there. It felt like everyone I knew had come out to support me.”

Rob McNab, Sambu’s high school coach at Cochrane, was among the familiar faces in the crowd. McNab, who recently retired, had always seen potential in the multi-talented athlete. “Justin was destined to succeed,” said McNab. “He’s always been a standout, whether on the track, basketball court, or football field. Seeing him play for the Stampeders is a proud moment.”

The Stamps face the Argonauts again this Friday in Toronto. Keep an eye out for Sambu, wearing #97, as he continues to make his mark in the CFL.
