Brisbane Lions are targeting former Gold Coast forward Sam Day as a potential replacement for the recently retired Joe Daniher. After securing the AFL premiership with a victory over Sydney, Daniher surprised the club by announcing his retirement, leaving Brisbane with limited time to explore trade options.
With a focus on cost-effective solutions, the Lions have turned their attention to Day, who has struggled to maintain a spot in Gold Coast’s senior side in recent seasons but remains eager to continue his career. The 32-year-old, who has played 155 games since 2011, featured in only 18 matches over the last four years. Despite limited opportunities, Day expressed a strong desire to keep playing, emphasizing his physical and mental readiness to contribute.
“I absolutely want to go around again. I’m definitely motivated,” Day said earlier this season. He also reflected on his renewed enthusiasm for the game, attributing his positive mindset to a balance between footy and family life.
In 2024, Day kicked 20 goals in eight VFL matches, showcasing his potential as a forward-ruck option. Brisbane sees Day as a suitable addition to support Oscar McInerney in the forward line, while also providing versatility. The Lions had briefly considered St Kilda free agent Tim Membrey but seem poised to make a move for Day, a player who could fill the gap left by Daniher at a lower cost.
With Day’s experience and motivation, Brisbane hopes to add another key piece to their forward structure as they look to build on their recent premiership success.
