Aston Villa was now singing and dancing on Europe’s grandest stage, whereas Newcastle United was basking in the spotlight just a year ago.

Considering where the teams were at the time, Unai Emery and Eddie Howe have performed admirably in their new roles.

Newcastle signed Howe as a replacement for Steve Bruce in November 2021. Although the team was in danger of being relegated at the time, they managed to escape with ease and qualified for the Champions League the next season.

Once again, in October 2022, Emery entered Villa Park with the squad just above the drop zone, but they would ultimately finish in Europe.

But Emery truly came into his own during his first full season in charge, leading Villa into the Champions League for the first time in many years.

This is true even if on the first day of the 2023–24 Premier League season, Howe and his Newcastle squad defeated Villa with five goals.

Since then, the two have fought fiercely, with the Magpies defeating the Midlands team both at home and away in the previous season.

However, Jason Tindall, Howe’s assistant, spoke about Villa and their manager’s strategy for games in a more refined manner.

The task assigned to Howe and Tindall was to construct their ideal manager by selecting the best tactical manager, the manager with the greatest aura, the finest speech, and the best defensive structure.

According to Adopted Geordies, Tindall handed Emery his flowers because of the way he sets up his side defensively and why he is the greatest at it.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery praised by Newcastle United for his defensive structure

According to Tindall, “I would say Emery has always been renowned for his defensive structure.”

“He’s performed admirably everywhere he’s gone with that, and since joining Aston Villa, he’s performed admirably as well. He would fit into that category for assembling a strong defensive team, in my opinion.

Aston Villa trying to repeat Champions League finish

After starting fourth the previous season, Newcastle finished seventh, and because Manchester United defeated Manchester City in the FA Cup final, that ranking did not result in any European football.

Villa will be hoping to take it as a lesson and not take the same path, but it seems like they are thinking otherwise.

First and foremost, the Champions League has a new framework that works for Villa and would have worked well for Newcastle the previous year.

Villa has a larger team than its rivals, who were placed on the back foot when summer addition Sandro Tonali was suspended early in the previous year.

While Boubacar Kamara and Tyrone Mings, two long-term absentees from club football due to national service, are among Emery’s important players who will be returning from the treatment room.
