Marc Guehi has acknowledged that once his deal to Newcastle United fell through, he sought to “get to work” right away.
Over the summer, Toon management made a mighty effort to capture the Crystal Palace defender. Up to three proposals, the biggest of which was estimated to be worth around £70 million, were reportedly rejected.
After Palace chairman Steve Parish sought “superstar money” for his asset, Newcastle finally gave up. Guehi’s value rose after England had a great Euro 2024 campaign.
But the Eagles’ Premier League season has gotten off to a rough start. With only zero victories in seven games, Guehi’s form is in doubt and he hasn’t exactly lit the globe on fire.
He rejoined the Three Lions for last night’s 3-1 victory over Finland on the road. The 24-year-old made reference to the Newcastle transfer mystery and talked candidly about his “tough” start to the season before the match.
Guehi said to talkSPORT, “I’d say (it’s been) quite tough not having a pre-season, not having much of a break and going straight back into it.” “I did the best I could to deal with it. The experience at the Euros was incredible, but it wasn’t nearly enough.
“And ever since, amid transfer rumours to Newcastle, I’ve just tried to put my head down and get to work.” We’ve had a difficult start at Palace, but I believe that everyone is moving in the right way as we work to return to our desired state.
Eddie Howe said that Newcastle’s inability to sign Guehi had left him upset. However, reports have indicated that the centre defender, who is approaching the last 18 months of his contract, may return to the Magpies in January.
