Newcastle United are reportedly willing to accept an offer for former Eddie Howe favourite Miguel Almiron in the January transfer window.
Almiron has only played thirty minutes of Premier League football this year, and in recent months, he has dropped in the hierarchy behind fellow wingers Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, and Jacob Murphy.
According to Football Insider, Howe no longer views the Paraguayan international, who has been strongly linked to leaving St James’ Park in each of the previous two transfer windows, as a part of his long-term plans.
According to Mick Brown, a former scout for West Ham United, Sunderland, and Manchester United, who was interviewed by the site, the 30-year-old is expected to depart the North East in order to gather money for a replacement hire for his post.
“Yes, that’s one I’ve heard they’re looking to do and get a deal done,” Brown responded. “Under Eddie Howe, he doesn’t feature regularly in their team any more. He was always a bit of a bright space and he looks electric at times, but he’s not consistent or efficient enough to play regularly at the top level. Now they’ve made the decision to move him on. “They’ve got people that can cover for him, but any fee they do get for him will likely be reinvested in that position. That right-hand side is certainly a concern of theirs, and they’ll look to bring in money from Almiron’s sale to avoid those financial regulations. Letting Almiron go will free up that money to spend in other areas.
With much excitement, Almiron made history in January 2019 by becoming the club’s all-time record move from Atalanta United in the Major League Soccer (MLS). Michael Owen had held the record for almost 12 years. Although the team’s last addition to Rafael Benitez struggled to score goals right away, in his first half-year he was praised for infusing the squad with a dynamism and pace that had been missing previously.
His explosive pace and extraordinary workrate made him and Allan Saint-Maximin seem like the team’s biggest threats going forward, even though they combined for just eight goals and three assists over the following two seasons.
Fans finally got to witness Almiron at his finest in the 2022–2023 season, when Newcastle finished fourth and he scored 11 goals and provided four assists in all competitions. He was instrumental in the team’s historic triumph over PSG by scoring the first goal in the Champions League for the club in twenty years. However, the season before, he managed just three goals and one assist in the league.
Almiron, who has made 112 appearances in three seasons, is the third most utilised player of the Howe era and has obviously been a highly valued member of the team during his time there. However, it is believed that they may explore a sale in the near future given the limitations of FFP and the team’s aim to restore a position in Europe.
Everton and Charlotte FC are said to have expressed interest in the winger in recent months, while Al Shabab of Saudi Arabia were allegedly turned down in January for not being able to fulfil Almiron’s then-established £30 million price tag.
