According to Alan Shearer, Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle United, was not contacted for the England manager position.
Thomas Tuchel’s hiring was made public by the FA on Wednesday. Along with assistant coach Anthony Barry, former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Tuchel will formally take over as the Three Lions’ manager in January. During the international break that occurs next month, England’s interim manager, Lee Carsley, will remain in charge of the team.
Tuchel, who won the Champions League in 2021 with Chelsea, has not had a job since departing Bayern Munich at the end of the previous year. Shearer, an icon of Newcastle, said that Howe was not viewed as a very exceptional choice, therefore he was surprised that the FA didn’t look closer to home.
“Hasn’t it occurred so quickly? As that’s essentially what he did, [Lineker] suggested that there could be a reason why Lee Carsley was disqualifying himself, Shearer remarked on the Rest is Football podcast. He could have known something that none of us knew, so maybe you were correct.
“I’m hoping they’ve had a conversation with English managers. I have reliable sources who tell me they either didn’t talk with Eddie Howe or didn’t even have a chance to hear from him, which surprises me much because Eddie Howe seems like the best English option.
Since joining Newcastle nearly three years ago, Howe has performed well, first keeping the team out of relegation and then taking them back to the Champions League. The England position was reportedly being considered for Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, and according to Lineker, the FA had also made contact with Carlo Ancelotti.
Shearer thinks Tuchel is a solid choice, but he also thinks there should be more investigation into the dearth of domestic contenders coming from the Premier League or England’s St George’s Park base. Though Shearer speculates that Manchester United’s interest in Tuchel may have expedited the transfer, the FA’s decision ultimately helps Newcastle.
Shearer continued, “I believe that because everything happened so quickly, the FA realised that they needed to take immediate action to avoid losing one of their top prospects, Tuchel, to a club management position. This could have happened very soon.” “I believe the reason he would start in January rather than earlier makes sense. They reasoned, “Let’s close this deal right away.”
That might raise some questions. What is the English coach’s path? If they intend to advance English coaches and have taken this centre along, thenIn a way, I’m relieved that Newcastle will not be losing their manager—he’s an excellent one. It is shocking that he hasn’t even been contacted, as he should have been the primary English contender in my opinion.
