Harry Sharp was traded to the Melbourne Demons as he sought more game time, struggling to break into Brisbane’s star-studded midfield despite being one of the top VFL performers.

The Brisbane Lions have successfully enhanced their draft positioning, trading promising midfielder Harry Sharp to the Melbourne Football Club in exchange for Pick 49 and a future selection tied to Essendon. The deal also involved a swap of future Round 3 picks between the two clubs, providing the Lions with additional flexibility for future drafts.

Sharp, 21, was selected by the Lions with Pick 43 in the 2020 AFL National Draft from the Greater Western Victoria Rebels. Known for his elite running ability, he broke the AFL Draft Combine 2k Time Trial record before arriving at Brisbane. Across four seasons, Sharp played 16 games for the Lions, standing out as one of the best performers in the VFL. However, despite his continuous development, the depth of Brisbane’s midfield made it difficult for him to secure a regular spot in the senior team.

Brisbane Lions General Manager of Football, Danny Daly, acknowledged the midfielder’s desire for more opportunities at AFL level. “Harry has always been a dedicated and popular member of our club, and while it’s difficult to see him go, we understand his wish to join Melbourne for greater opportunities. We wish Harry and his family all the best for the future,” Daly said.

Reflecting on his time with Brisbane, Sharp expressed his gratitude. “I leave the Lions with mixed emotions. While I’m excited about the new opportunity at Melbourne, it’s hard to say goodbye to the club that gave me my start in the AFL. The relationships I’ve built here and the support I received will always hold a special place in my heart.”

This trade not only helps the Lions strengthen their draft hand but also provides Sharp with a fresh opportunity to shine at Melbourne, where he’ll aim to take his career to the next level.
