The first team news before Newcastle United’s trip to Chelsea, a Premier League adversary, next weekend.
When Chelsea plays Newcastle United at home in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, they will be happy to have two of their best defenders back.
The Magpies will head to West London in an attempt to recover from a heartbreaking loss to Brighton and Hove Albion; however, if they are to do so, they will need to turn around their appalling record against Chelsea. In the Premier League’s history, Newcastle has just once defeated the Blues with all 29 games played at Stamford Bridge, and they have also lost 21 of the 29 games.
As Callum Wilson nears the end of his back injury recovery, the Magpies will be hoping for good news of their own on the selection front. Wilson is expected to be eligible for the first time this season. However, Kieran Trippier is unlikely to return to action until next month due to a hamstring injury, while Eddie Howe will undoubtedly be without the services of long-term injury casualties Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles.
Chelsea will enter the encounter with the knowledge that they will have £130 million worth of defensive talent back, after both Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana have served out their one-match bans for picking up five yellow cards in the first two months of the season. The two could start for Eddie Howe’s team when they play Sunday despite missing the close loss at Liverpool. The availability of left-back Ben Chilwell, who looked to be leaving Stamford Bridge over the summer, is less certain. Despite being linked to a transfer abroad, the England left-back stayed with the Blues and now has the opportunity to fight his way back into the mix as Maresca hinted at a potential return to the first team.
The Blues manager said in a statement last month: “Since Ben is the only member of the exiled group who is still here, we’ll probably sit with him and figure something out.” He will most likely rejoin us for training sessions. He isn’t training with us right now. He is training separately because it was intended for him to go. However, since we were unable to come up with a solution, he is here and most likely will begin training with us. That’s something we have to decide. Should we make that decision, he will be among our players.
Chillwell missed Sunday’s loss at Anfield due to an illness, but he might make his season debut when his club hosts Newcastle after rejoining the Blues first team group for training. Omari Kellyman will be sidelined while he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury, but Maresca had some positive news when defender Reece James made his Premier League debut during the first 53 minutes of the match against Liverpool.
