Sam Walker appears set to remain with the Sydney Roosters, despite past links to the Brisbane Broncos, the team he grew up supporting. Walker, who is reportedly close to a lucrative two-year extension with the Roosters, almost joined the Broncos in 2019 but was deterred by what’s been described as a “petty” $60 Uber ride.
Both clubs, along with Wallabies scouts, pursued Walker after his standout performances in schoolboy rugby. However, during a pivotal meeting with the Broncos, the club insisted Walker attend without his parents, leaving the young player to cover his own $60 Uber fare from Ipswich to Red Hill. In contrast, the Roosters, under chairman Nick Politis, flew Walker and his parents to Sydney, allowing the young talent to meet with coach Trent Robinson in a more supportive environment.
Following the meeting, Walker expressed his preference for the Roosters, feeling the team provided the right environment and support for his development. After signing with them, he quickly established himself as a key player, taking over as halfback following Cooper Cronk’s retirement. Although briefly moved to reserve grade in 2023, he regained his place and ended the season strong.
Despite a recent ACL injury, Walker is expected to finalize his two-year, $2.1 million contract extension soon, keeping him with the Roosters until the end of 2027. This news brings relief to the Roosters as they see off several high-profile players at the season’s end.
