According to a few stories that surfaced yesterday afternoon, the “Guido Rodriguez’ departure” story is gaining momentum and is actually already moving forward. It’s time to raise the flags.
It would be much better to acknowledge that he was a poor acquisition and move on, replacing him with a younger, fitter, and more adaptable player.
Yesterday evening, the Spanish website fichajes.net, which has a strong connection to La Liga, included the headline, “The midfielder for which Betis is already negotiating for January,” implying that talks are already in progress.
The story continues by stating that, given the Spanish team’s severe midfield shortage (how ironic!) an initial loan agreement would likely be the quickest way to get him out of London.: “This football player might be the best choice to bolster the team during the upcoming transfer window, as the green and white team has problems in the middle of the pitch.”
“Guido might be the best candidate to cover the losses [injuries] and bring Manuel Pellegrini’s team back into balance in the second half of the season because of his prior experience and understanding of Betis’ style of play.”
There will likely be difficult discussions because his wage at West Ham was reportedly almost five times that of Betis. However, the fact that negotiations are in progress only encourages those of us who have been concerned about West Ham’s poor midfield performances under Lopetegui.
