Premier League champions are easily defeated by Spurs in a thrilling 4-0 triumph.
After their thrilling triumph over Premier League champions Manchester City on Saturday, Tottenham is still receiving a tonne of plaudits.
Spurs gave their season new life with a resounding 4-0 victory over City. Inconsistencies have often thwarted Ange Postecoglou’s attempts to position his team as legitimate contenders, but their decisive victory was a clear declaration of purpose.
Even if Pep Guardiola’s team is in a crisis, Spurs travelled to the Etihad Stadium, where the champions hadn’t lost in nearly two years, without a number of important players.
Rodrigo Bentancur served the first of his seven-match suspension, and Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, both first-choice centre defenders, were out.
As a result, Postecoglou was had to make adjustments, and he successfully paired Radu Dragusin and Ben Davies at the centre of his defence. In order to insert James Maddison into the starting lineup after his recent drop, the Spurs manager also took the chance of moving Dejan Kulusevski back out wide after a successful stint in midfield.
The adjustments clearly paid off, as Kulusevski was instrumental in two of the four goals and Maddison scored a brace on his 28th birthday.
After the game, Guardiola was full of praise for the two, but Gary Neville, a Sky Sports analyst, thinks the two were only two of five Spurs players who ran “all over” City in midfield.
