Gugliemo Vicario undergoes surgery as Spurs injury woes continue
Guglielmo Vicario, the custodian for Tottenham Hotspur, had surgery to repair a fractured ankle he suffered during the team’s thrilling 4-0 Premier League victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
Spurs have not yet released an official recuperation timeframe, and the Italian international’s injury has ruled him out indefinitely despite finishing the game.
Since joining Ange Postecoglou’s team from Empoli in the summer of 2023, the 28-year-old has been virtually constant, missing just four games in all competitions.
Spurs’ Premier League and Europa League campaigns have benefited greatly from his reliable performances, so his absence is all the more worrisome.
Given that the Lilywhites’ injury problems coincide with an accumulation of games, Fraser Forster, who filled in for Vicario during his earlier absences this season, is probably going to do so once more.
Tottenham, who are currently sixth in the Premier League following their impressive performance against the defending champions, must also manage their Europa League campaign, where they are currently seventh in their group with three wins and one loss.
Dr Rajpal Brar’s Spurs injury verdict on Guglielmo Vicario
According to Dr. Rajpal Brar, an injury specialist, Vicario may have to miss a significant amount of time due to the severity of his injuries.
Dr. Brar, a sports scientist and physical therapy specialist, discussed the subject exclusively with Spurs Web, saying: “The information we know is very general but typically foot/ankle [injuries] are around 6-8 weeks.” Depending on the specifics and severity of the injury, it can be less or more.
Spurs cannot catch a break with injuries this season
It’s difficult not to be annoyed by the injury’s timing as a Spurs supporter. Matches come thick and fast in December, and managing the demanding schedule requires having a deep squad.
Vicario is currently out, and other important players are already out, so it appears that we are unable to get away with injuries this season.
The 36-year-old Fraser Forster will be expected to replace Vicario, and although I have faith in Forster, I can’t help but wonder if he will be able to uphold the lofty standards the Italian goalie set.
Vicario’s injury is a clear reminder of how brittle our depth may be, therefore I hope his recuperation happens sooner rather than later than anticipated.
Every game feels like a test of endurance as much as skill because of the approaching holiday schedule. With any luck, Spurs will be able to weather this storm without dropping further in the quest for the top four.
