Ian Wright, a legend of Arsenal, was picked by Alan Shearer as his favourite football fan.
Both former attackers, who have scored 703 goals in English football, are legendary at their respective clubs. The two are among the best No. 9s in this country’s history, especially when you include the additional 39 goals they have scored on the international stage.
In the 1990s, Shearer and Wright were at the top of their game and frequently competed for the Golden Boot. Before switching to the world-record St. James’ Park, the Toon legend won the trophy twice for Blackburn Rovers in 1995, 1996, and 1997.
With goals from both Crystal Palace and Arsenal, Wright was named the 1992 Golden Boot winner. After flourishing on the pundit scene for years, covering some of England’s biggest games and starring on Match of the Day, former rivals are now best friends.
Unfortunately, the friendship came to an end at the end of the previous season when Wright, the Gunners’ idol, announced his retirement from the BBC’s premier sports program. Even if Gary Lineker leaves next summer, Shearer will continue to be the most prominent commentator.
In an interview with the Rest Is Football podcast, Newcastle’s all-time top scorer disclosed his favourite person to drink with while watching football, and the response was unexpected: “For me, over the years, I’ve sat with Wrighty, Ian Wright. It’s like he turns into a different person (when watching football).” “The enthusiasm, the passion, the anger and the joy (come out).” I’ve sat with him for Arsenal vs. Newcastle games and it is electric. “The rows, the shouts, the language… everything you can imagine. So yeah, it’s a great experience. He carries it all with him. He’s great company though.”
