Spurs may not be able to permanently sign the German attacker, despite the fact that he has shown flashes of his brilliance.
Bryan King, a former club scout, has questioned Werner’s compatibility with Ange Postecoglou’s system. He was taken aback by the first loan decision and implied that the 28-year-old would not be a good fit for the team in the long run.
King pointed out that Tottenham already has a lot of depth in wide positions and feels that before thinking about a permanent move, the team should concentrate on other priorities.
The former Tottenham player told Tottenham News:
“I don’t believe Werner should be a permanent Spurs player. The team already has enough wide players, thus there are more crucial places to fill. I was taken aback when he initially joined the Spurs.
He’s not a Tottenham player in my opinion. Since entering the club, he has clearly maintained a professional demeanour. But he just doesn’t seem like a Spurs player to me.
Timo Werner has failed to find his feet at Tottenham
Werner showed potential when he joined Spurs on a six-month loan in January of this year. In a 2-2 tie with Manchester United, he made his debut by setting up Rodrigo Bentancur’s equaliser. In March, he scored two goals in a row, helping the team defeat Crystal Palace and Aston Villa.
The Lilywhites were so impressed with Werner’s contributions that they decided to prolong his loan for a further season with an £8.5 million buyout option. However, the left-winger has struggled for consistency in the current campaign.
He helped Brennan Johnson lead the team to a resounding 4-0 league victory over the same opponents, and he scored his first goal of the season in a 2-1 League Cup triumph over Manchester City.
Werner’s total record of one goal and two assists in 15 games across all competitions shows a mixed return despite these moments of brilliance.
Although no decision has been taken as of yet, recent sources have indicated that the club may sign him to a permanent contract in the summer.
Spurs will soon have to make a decision on Werner’s future because RB Leipzig has his contract until 2026.
