With great pleasure, the Parramatta Eels announce that Black Fern Martha Mataele has agreed to a two-year contract that will expire at the end of 2026.
Mark O’Neill, general manager of the Parramatta Eels football team, described Martha as an explosive football player who can light up the pitch with her speed and agility.
Her skill will bolster our defence and provide an additional attacking threat. We can’t wait to watch her contribute to the NRLW.
Mataele said she was excited to go from rugby union to rugby league.
Martha Mataele declared, “I’m ecstatic to be joining the Parramatta Eels and contributing my skills to rugby league.”
“I’m thrilled to embark on this new chapter in my career, and the Eels are a rising force in the NRLW.” I have a strong desire to help women’s sports flourish and to leave a legacy that encourages others to take on new challenges.
In 2019, Martha Mataele (née Lolohea) made her Canterbury debut in the provincial competition of New Zealand. In 2022, she scored a try in every game, leading her team to yet another championship.
Playing alongside her sister to win the Aupiki, Mataele made her debut for Matatū in the first season of Super Rugby Aupiki in 2023.
Before being selected for the Black Ferns’ match against Australia, Mataele relocated to Perth to join her husband, Manasa Mataele, in the Western Force.
Having been born in New Zealand, Martha identifies as Tongan, and her family has a diverse lineage. Her mother’s side is Samoan, Fijian, and Italian, while her father’s side is Samoan and Fijian.
