During the post-game press conference, Pierce was clearly frustrated and swore on the microphone about wanting to pull the club out of its downward spiral. In particular, he talked about having to address the media about his team’s weekly losses. “We need a break, we need a prayer … it just didn’t go our way,” Pierce stated. “We’re not winning, but the guys are all in.” We’re simply not winning, and I’m at a loss for words. Do I want to win, S***? Yes, I do want to win. Do I want to have the same conversation with you all and continue to look at the same thing every week? No.
The Raiders’ 15-9 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night tied for the second-worst losing run in the team’s history, tying a 13-game skid from 1962, and was their 10th straight loss. It was also the longest losing streak in the NFL this season. “Bad day at the office, really bad day at the office,” Pierce said, describing the game in frustration. “All three phases must perform well.”
The Raiders’ offense struggled immensely, failing to produce any meaningful movement for extended periods of time, despite a few last-minute, desperate Hail Mary efforts. They were even stuffed for a safety after turning the ball over three times. They only got 96 total net yards in their first 10 possessions. With two blocked punts, a blocked extra-point try, and a fair-caught punt at their own 3-yard line that resulted in the safety, special teams’ problems were disastrous.
With quarterback Aidan O’Connell possibly making a comeback against the Jacksonville Jaguars next week, there is some hope even if the defense was also lacking five important starters. Pierce, “I am not budging,” he added. “We’ll keep chopping wood and at some point, the d*** thing will break and go our way.” The players themselves are in dire need of a victory to change the tide, notwithstanding the optimism of certain fans over the likelihood of obtaining the first selection in the next draft. Pierce’s frustration with the Raiders’ losing streak is understandable. According to reports, the head coach is not “an absolute lock” to rejoin the team for the upcoming campaign, and more defeats would undoubtedly make that less likely.
“I think it was pretty evident that Antonio Pierce’s future is unsettled when Mark Davis spoke at the owners’ meetings last week,” NFL Insider Adam Schefter said earlier this week. When questioned about the head coach and general manager, he stated that he does not see them as a team. Tom Telesco, who was hired by the Raiders in the offseason, made it clear that each player will be evaluated separately. ‘Yeah, I’ll get to everything after the season,’ he added. It is safe to assume that Pierce has a lot riding on the game between the 2-12 Raiders and the 3-11 Jaguars next week.
