In an emotional and unfiltered interview, Brisbane Broncos star Ben Hunt has revealed the deep scars left by his time as captain of the St. George Illawarra Dragons, sharing a story of betrayal, broken trust, and unfulfilled loyalty.

Hunt, who led the Dragons with pride and dedication through some of the club’s most challenging seasons, didn’t mince words. “I was their captain,” he began, his voice trembling. “I gave them everything—my heart, my soul, my best years—and in the end, they turned their backs on me. I’ll never forget or forgive them for what they did.”

For Hunt, the pain runs deeper than results on the field. It’s about the promises that were made but never kept, the lack of support in the toughest moments, and the way he was treated as his tenure came to an end.

“I wore that jersey with pride every single week,” Hunt continued. “I stood up for them when nobody else would. But when I needed them, when I needed their faith, their loyalty—they abandoned me. They betrayed me.”

Hunt’s time at the Dragons was marked by immense pressure, yet he often stood tall, carrying the weight of the team’s struggles on his shoulders. Now, as he reflects on those years, it’s clear the emotional toll was overwhelming.

“They asked me to lead, to inspire, to fight for them. And I did. But in the end, I was left feeling like just another player they could discard. It broke me,” he admitted.

Now back with the Brisbane Broncos, Hunt is finding solace in the familiar embrace of his old club and its fans. Yet, the wounds left by his Dragons experience remain fresh.

“I’m grateful to be home, to be where I’m appreciated,” Hunt said, his resolve evident. “But I’ll never forget how I was treated at the Dragons. They taught me a lesson I’ll carry forever—loyalty has to go both ways.”

For Dragons fans, Hunt’s words are a stark reminder of the human side of rugby league—a captain whose commitment was unmatched, but whose trust was shattered. For Hunt, it’s a chapter he’s determined to move on from, but one that will always carry a bittersweet edge.
