Everton have suffered a blow to any chance of securing Graham Potter who has held further positive talks with West Ham United, according to Rob Dorsett.

The journalist revealed live on Sky Sports (7 January) that Potter and the Hammers have enjoyed productive discussions with a view to replacing Julen Lopetegui in taking the reins at the London Stadium.

The Toffees have been told they must “move quickly” if the Friedkins are serious about lining up the former Chelsea boss to replace Sean Dyche, whose position is under pressure with the club 16th in the Premier League. Dorsett announced: “This is significant information I’ve been given. I can tell you Graham Potter is closing in on a return to football more than 18 months after he was sacked by Chelsea, and he’s getting closer to becoming the West Ham head coach.

Potter and West Ham officials have had fruitful more discussions [Tuesday afternoon], and both parties are hopeful that a solution will be reached. Graham Potter might be in control of West Ham’s team for their upcoming game against Aston Villa, albeit some contractual matters need to be finalized.

“I understand that [Everton’s] interest is still in the background, but as things stand, Potter and West Ham are making progress, and it looks like Potter will be the next manager of West Ham.”

Everton set to miss out on Graham Potter

Although it always appeared that West Ham was much more certain of firing their current head coach than the Toffees were of Dyche, Everton was correct to express interest in Potter.

With Potter now apparently headed to West Ham, it appears that the Friedkin Group will have to own up to their hesitancy, even if they have demonstrated with Roma that they are not afraid to make big decisions at the last minute.

Potter will return to the Premier League with the transfer to the capital after being fired by Chelsea and turning down many other employment offers for almost two years.

Jamie Carragher was one of many who acknowledged that, given the Hammers’ decreased risk of relegation this season, a move to West Ham would currently be more alluring than one to Goodison Park.

The two are currently two positions apart in the Premier League table, with a six-point difference in the Irons’ favour albeit having played an additional game to the Toffees.
