After saving two late penalties in Burnley’s 0-0 draw with Sunderland, goalkeeper James Trafford has been strongly linked to a move to Newcastle United.
Two, not one.
Even though he hasn’t signed a contract yet, Newcastle United transfer target James Trafford is already a favorite among Magpies supporters. In the final moments of Burnley’s Championship six-pointer with, you guessed it, Sunderland, the England under-21 goalie saved TWO penalties, making him the team’s hero.
It’s safe to say that Geordies have taken a liking to his heroics and end-of-game antics.
Wilson Isidor was hauled down outside the area with less than five minutes remaining, but the referee pointed to the spot, awarding Sunderland a contentious penalty.
After a long while, Trafford took off his gloves and left the Frenchman waiting to take his penalty with the ball on the spot. After feigning to go to his left, Trafford easily made a save by walking and diving to his right.
Trafford then turned to face the Sunderland supporters and made a gunshot motion with his fingers before grinning and winking.
As the game neared the completion of six extra minutes, drama seemed to be coming to a close. Once more.
Another penalty was imposed this time. Trafford fell once more. He was booked for his actions this time, but it made little difference. After getting rid of his cramp, he took his place between the sticks and, even though he ran to his left again and yelled at Isidor to inform him that he had every right to aim for, Trafford and the taker both moved in the same direction and made another, better save.
As Trafford saved a point for the Clarets, his teammates surrounded him.
Geordie’s social media has been flooded with admiration for the footballer, with many people yelling, “Sign him up.”
The Magpies are major fans of the 22-year-old former Manchester City goalie, who was on the verge of signing with them last summer and is anticipated to be tracked again this season.
He was estimated to be worth around £20 million, but with many more performances like this, his value will undoubtedly increase.
