NFL rumors: A contender “to watch” for the Seahawks position is Mike Kafka, amid speculations about Dan Quinn and Mike Macdonald
Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, appeared to be a strong contender to take over as head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. But now that Johnson has withdrawn from the contest, the Seahawks have to go elsewhere.
Mike Kafka, the offensive coordinator for the New York Giants, has become a serious contender for the head coach position in Seattle, according to Dan Graziano of ESPN, h/t Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times. Kafka has had two interviews with the Seahawks over the opening.
“Mike Kafka, the offensive coordinator for the Giants, is someone to keep an eye on in Seattle as a possible candidate for the Seattle job, if it’s not Mike Macdonald,” Graziano stated.
The fact that DC Macdonald of the Baltimore Ravens was brought up indicates that there are other candidates vying for the Seahawks job. Though Kafka will undoubtedly face opposition, the group is committed to bringing the OC to Seattle.
Since 2022, Kafka has served as the offensive coordinator for the Giants. From 2017 to 2021, he was employed by the Kansas City Chiefs, rising to the position of quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator.
Things did not go well for Kafka and the Giants this past season. Daniel Jones suffered a serious injury, and as a result, New York’s offense, which averaged 280 yards per game, was the fourth worst in the NFL. With Jones healthy, the Giants finished 18th in 2022 with an average of 333.9 yards per game.
