coaching gig. The veteran defensive lineman had first
When Bill Belichick left the New England Patriots last month, Deatrich Wise was in the same camp as a lot of other people.
Wise reasoned that Belichick will eventually land his next head coaching position. Having spent seven seasons playing for Belichick, the seasoned defensive lineman saw firsthand what the coach could bring to a club.
There were seven head coaching positions in the league, all of which are currently filled, but even though Belichick was supposedly getting close to joining the Atlanta Falcons, there wasn’t much of a market for him.
It was definitely not what Wise had anticipated, with Belichick being the odd man out after the coaching hires were finalized.
The fact that no one will pick him up surprised me a little, but it doesn’t take away from his excellent coaching abilities. “He’s still a great, great coach,” Wise said to Chris Mason of MassLive. “He continues to accomplish amazing things for Patriot Nation, the NFL, Boston, and the game of football.
“I hope he succeeds in anything he decides to pursue this year. I’m confident that he will have a prosperous next chapter.
Given that Belichick is expected to be unemployed for the first time in almost 50 years in the NFL next season, he may decide to transition to television or bide his time until a position becomes available in 2025.
Regardless of the outcome, Wise, who was taken by Belichick in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL draft out of Arkansas, and went on to become a two-time captain for the Patriots, will be supporting his former coach.
We all wish Bill Belichick the best of luck wherever he goes because we are aware of his history in the league and with our team, Wise added.
