Fabrizio Romano has shared further details on Tottenham Hotspur’s player-plus-cash swap deal bid to sign Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey.
In the summer transfer window this year, the North Londoners have been particularly active.
Timo Werner has already been re-signed by Ange Postecoglou on a loan agreement, while Spurs have also permitted the departure of players like Ivan Perisic, Ryan Sessegnon, Japhet Tanganga, and Tanguy Ndombele.
Tottenham has been connected to a number of names in recent weeks and is anticipated to add many players during this transfer season.
The star of Aston Villa, Ramsey, is one of them, and Romano has revealed what he knows about Spurs’ alleged approach.
Fabrizio Romano shares update on Tottenham’s Giovani Lo Celso and Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey
Tottenham attempted to get Jack Grealish from Aston Villa in a player-plus-cash trade deal years ago.
In an attempt to capture the now-Manchester City star, Daniel Levy made a bid of £3 million plus Josh Onomah; however, Villa turned down the deal, which turned out to be the right one (The Athletic).
Spurs attempted a similar deal in 2024, but this offer is far more reasonable than the one they made for Grealish years earlier.
According to reports on Wednesday, Aston Villa received an offer from Tottenham to capture Ramsey this summer. Giovani Lo Celso was also included in the £20 million offer.
Villa, predictably enough, turned down that offer!
Now that he has weighed in on the matter, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the reports regarding Tottenham’s proposal are accurate.
But that was weeks ago; it wasn’t that recent. Romano affirmed that Villa turned down the offer right away and that was that.
After that, the reporter discussed Lo Celso’s future and declared that the Argentina international will be leaving the team this summer.
“What I can tell is, this story of Tottenham making a bid to Aston Villa for Ramsey including a player, Gio Lo Celso, and money, is a bid they made, yes,” he stated during an appearance on Playback.
However, that wasn’t this week or even last week—it was weeks ago. It happened weeks ago. Aston Villa declined right away.
“There’s a high likelihood Gio Lo Celso will leave Tottenham during the summer transfer window. I have a suspicion that Gio Lo Celso will depart from Tottenham.
“We are still considering our options. Betis is present, Unai Emery is familiar with him, and there are many opportunities. However, he will be leaving the club.”
What should Tottenham do now?
Lo Celso from Real Betis was acquired by Tottenham for a reported £55 million (Sky Sports).
Although the Argentina international is an extremely gifted player, he hasn’t been able to secure a consistent starting position at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for whatever reason.
Prior to staying with Tottenham for the 2023–2024 season, Lo Celso went on two loan stints. Since he is set to enter the last year of his term, there is no reason to keep him under contract.
Tottenham is therefore correct to sell Lo Celso, and even if their first attempt to get Ramsey was turned down, we believe they ought to try again, this time putting more money on the table in addition to the Argentine.
It’s unclear, though, if Villa will consider a greater offer.
