The Scottish top flight could soon be raking in huge amounts of cash for some of its top players
There is still a lot of work to be done during the transfer window, which has little over three weeks left.
Rangers would also like a new striker if the money were available, but Celtic still need at least one. While Hearts having completed the most of their business, Hibs anticipate being busy. Although Aberdeen has had some success, the main concern for the remainder of the window will be keeping their star player, Bojan Miovski. It makes sense that supporters would be focused on the new additions, but a lot will rely on who joins and at what cost.
Scottish teams have long known that selling their greatest players will ultimately be necessary. Cut price fees, particularly from England, were also, for much too long, merely recognized with a shrug of the shoulders. Fortunately, during the past few years, that tendency has been abandoned, and our clubs now demand the market fee, or anything close to it, from bigger lads who approach them. Although there are instances when gamblers will never have enough money, we’re at last getting over our gratitude for small change.
The large domino that has yet to fall is Matt O’Riley. The Celtic midfield player is rumored to be preparing a £25 million proposal, while Southampton and Atalanta (three times) have made bids. That looks to be the key sum that would break the previous record cost for Kieran Tierney and then match it for Jota, while also at least forcing Celtic to the negotiation table. Although the Hoops are flush with cash, it is unlikely that all of O’Riley’s money will be reinvested in the squad.
Other potential departure include centre backs Gustaf Lagerbielke and Maik Nawrocki. Neither have had much of a sniff since arriving last summer and are clearly surplus to requirements. Whether both will be allowed to leave remains to be seen, with depth still needed in the middle of defence. Around £7.3million was spent on the pair, so if Celtic can recoup at least of that, then it will be good business.
What is the intended use of the incoming funds? Brendan Rodgers prioritizes having a striker. In an effort to get Adam Idah back to Parkhead, an offer ranging from £6 million to £8 million has been made. Though maybe not as urgently as at the other end of the field, a left back and a center back are still necessary.
