American investor claims Spurs stadium is ‘way too nice for football’ and says he would prefer Everton to ‘stay at Goodison forever
Remarkably, John Textor, a stakeholder in Crystal Palace and the most recent bidder for Everton, has said that Tottenham Hotspur’s £1 billion stadium is “too nice.”
Although many people agree that Spurs’ arena is among the most spectacular current Premier League locations, the American billionaire expressed his displeasure in an interview with Sky Sports News.
“I’m not a fan of Tottenham.” When I get into that stadium, I think it’s too wonderful,” Textor remarked.
“It was in the banquet hall during my first few visits there with friends, and I genuinely felt that this wasn’t football. I still think so now.
“This stadium is far too good for football.”
Textor made these comments after claiming that he is almost ready to sell his Palace shares in order to work toward an agreement with Farhad Moshiri, the primary owner of Everton.
Moshiri is in the midst of an extended sales process, and in the past, he has given bids 777 partners and the AS Roma owners, the Friedkin Group, exclusivity. There was no agreement reached by either party.
According to Textor, he is now having exclusive conversations.
A substantial portion of Moshiri’s financial predicament can be attributed to the £500 million (approximately) new stadium the club is building. At the beginning of the next season, the team will move to a magnificent location on Liverpool’s docks, which is seen to represent a ray of optimism amid a difficult time both on and off the field.
‘I would stay at Goodison forever’
However, Textor states that if given the option, he would prefer that Everton remain at its current location, Goodison Park. He makes this reference to the May 2022 game when the team defeated Palace to stave off relegation under Frank Lampard.
“As the owner of Crystal Palace, I recall seeing them play one of their best games against Everton in a long time under Patrick Vieira,” Textor recalled.
“Everton came out and tied the game, although we had the lead 2-0.
“I was sitting directly above the dugout, and there were people running around the stadium.” “What a strange stadium, what a strange layout… but what a beautiful stadium,” I thought to myself. It is similar to standing in front of a large pole at Fenway Park. The field is hidden from view, yet that is part of its allure.
“Everton still has my attention, even if they were playing on a field next to Goodison Park. Even if I would stay at Goodison indefinitely, investors are obviously behind me since, despite the money I need to purchase the team, I think I can significantly improve this team’s competitiveness.
But let’s be honest—we don’t want Everton to continuously hover in eighth place. We want to win a title, and getting there requires a significant amount of money. In my experience, I’ve always had no trouble getting to it, so in that regard, the stadium is enormous.
