Somehow, the Raiders already lack pass rushers. Due to a knee injury, Malcom Koonce was placed on injured reserve before to the start of the season and will miss at least the first four games. A previous Top 10 selection temporarily replaced Koonce for the Raiders, but Tyree Wilson also departed the game in Week 1 due to a knee injury.
This explains why, only ten days into the regular season, the Raiders signed K’Lavon Chaisson, a fellow former first round pick, to the practice squad and were active in the pass-rushing free agency market. Not that Antonio Pierce expected his defense to be pushed this early, but you can kind of deal with it when you have guys like Christian Wilkins and Maxx Crosby.
It seems like you could gt your wish sooner rather than later if you’re curious in how Chaisson fits in with the Raiders defense (I don’t know why either, but some folks are!). Wednesday’s weekly news conference featured a fairly dismal report on Wilson’s status before Sunday’s game in Baltimore.
Ouch! Pierce’s candid admission that Wilson won’t likely suit up on Sunday is disheartening, especially in light of the fact that NFL coaches generally take even the slightest injury reports with them to the grave. When Koonce got hurt, Wilson was expected to play a far bigger role than his preseason output had earned him. Wilson’s need for a great season has been well-documented.
Furthermore, Wilson’s position isn’t assured for him even if he returns healthy. It wouldn’t be shocking to see Pierce ride the hot hand if Chaisson proves to be at least moderately effective; after all, Wilson isn’t really that much better than Chaisson. Tyree Wilson’s career is almost probably not done, but if his knee injury takes him off the field for a lengthy amount of time, then that could be the last chapter she writes. What a fantastic week it is to be traveling to face one of the top clubs in the AFC.
