After winning the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday, Max Verstappen is now just one race away from setting yet another Formula One record.
At Spa-Francorchamps, Verstappen started the race from sixth on the grid and finished more than 22 seconds clear of his Red Bull colleague Sergio Pérez in second and more than 32 seconds ahead of Charles Leclerc in third.
His eighth consecutive win and tenth of the season came from the commanding triumph. Sebastian Vettel has nine consecutive racing victories, which is the record.
Remarkably, Red Bull has won 13 times in a row since the start of the previous season, and 12 times this year. They are the first team in the history of the sport to win the first 12 races of the season.
“(Winning from) P6 is a new spot. We had a fantastic car, I knew that all we had to do was make it through Turn One. He later commented on Sky Sports, “I was just going to stay out of that because I could see it getting really tight, and it worked out.”
We then proceeded to make the appropriate passes and maneuvers. At first, I was a little caught in a DRS train, but after it was over, I was able to work at my own leisure. Once more, quite pleasurable.
With Sunday’s victory, the Dutch driver increased his lead in the drivers’ championship to 125 points and demonstrated why he is the clear front-runner. He passed rivals at will throughout the race.
Verstappen was so at ease throughout the race that he even proposed doing a practice pit stop.
Verstappen was overheard on their radio telling his team, “I could also push on and do another stop – a bit of pit stop practice.”
The answer was unequivocal. Not at all. Not at this moment.
