The New York Giants thought they had gotten a bit of a tseal last March when they acquired wide receiver Parris Campbell, a former standout receiver for Ohio State and the Indianapolis Colts, during free agency.
On a Colts squad with a lot of instability at quarterback, Campbell was coming off the best season of his injury-plagued four-year career, catching 63 catches for 623 yards and three touchdowns.
With quarterback Daniel Jones poised to emerge as one of the league’s finest, the Giants were coming off a season in which they had made it to the postseason for the first time since 2017.
That was not the case. The season was ended by a ruptured ACL sustained by Jones, among other injuries, and the Giants offense finished last in the NFL.
Production-wise, the Giants wide receiver group suffered a great deal, but none more than Campbell, who never seemed to find his place and drift off course. He has only caught 20 passes for 104 yards as of this writing, with no touchdowns in 12 games.
After being a healthy scratch during the Giants’ exciting 24-22 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Monday night, Campbell became more of an afterthought in Week 14.
To the fifth-year veteran, who many predicted would play a major role in the Giants’ offense this season, the benching came as a shock and hurt.
“Yes, I was really taken aback,” Campbell admitted to the New York Daily News. “Shoot, more than anything, I was simply hurt. Hurt that I am aware of the effort I put into it every single week. And it was undoubtedly upsetting and painful for me to remain idle for the first time in my career. Indeed, a wide range of emotions are present.
Although it wasn’t enough, Campbell claimed the team handled it appropriately by informing him 24 hours in advance of their decision, which lessened the damage.
He remarked, “I was thankful for that because it wasn’t a surprise to me right before the game, and they respected me enough to tell me early enough.” “Therefore, I totally appreciated that. That isn’t necessary.
Here at Giants Wire, we are not surprised that Campbell has been cut from their extended roster. He was one of the five players that we determined to be the least likely to receive a callback request in 2024.
Campbell will be a free agent after agreeing to a one-year, $4.7 million “prove-it” contract. It appears that the Giants have moved on from him sooner than anticipated.
