After defeating North Florida to finally snap its losing streak, Florida State will now take on one of the top low-major programs in collegiate basketball. Although Winthrop hasn’t yet defeated a team from a major league, they have been competitive, and they will probably be itching to take on a struggling Florida State squad. Since the 2016–17 season, these teams have faced off three times, with FSU emerging victorious in the prior two

Any basketball fans who are still interested, this game will be broadcast live from the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee, Florida, at 7 p.m. on ESPN+/ACCNX.

meetings. In 2019, Winthrop came closer than anticipated, losing to FSU by just 11.

Head coach Mark Prosser, who joined Winthrop from Western Carolina, is in his third season with the team. In the 2019–20 season, FSU played his Western Carolina team; it was a lot closer game than expected, with the best FSU team we’ll probably ever see narrowly winning by five points.

The only defensive point I really want to make is that teams are shooting 80% of their free throws against them, which is a ridiculous percentage and something they have no control over. Just three teams shoot 80% or higher from the free throw line, including them. With 14.3 points per game and 3.8 rebounds per game, KJ Doucet is the team’s top scorer. Being a 6’7″ and 230-pound guy who shoots 4.5 threes per game at a 44.1% rate, he is a special low major talent. In addition, he makes a good number of trips to the free throw line and shoots 77.8% from there. Just a really strong, foundational basketball player that Florida State might find difficult to  only trying three threes this season, Kelton Talford, who is an interior player, shoots 60% from the field and has made more trips to the free-throw line than any other player. His 12.1 points per game and 4.2 reb

One of the most consistent shooters I have ever seen is Kason Harrison; he shot 48.4% from three games during his Lamar freshman season to 24.5% in his sophomore year. After transferring to Winthrop, he shot 45.2% from three games the previous year and is currently shooting 29.7%. Never saw anything similar to it. While he is shooting a career-worst 41.8% on twos this year, he has generally been stronger inside the arc. In any case, his 10.5 points per game, which would also be a career low, puts him third on the team in scoring. Moreover, a strong defender who averages 1.5 steals each game.

ounds per game rank him second on the squad.Big guy Alex Timmerman leads the squad in rebounds with 10.2 points per game and 5.4 rebounds after coming off the bench in most games. At 88.4%, he has an excellent free throw percentage. Although he performs admirably on offense, you would prefer him to be a more reliable interior presence defensively.

Both Nick Johnson and Sin’Cere McMahon are skilled three-point shooters who are almost averaging double-figure points. They are currently hitting threes above 37.5%. While McMahon is more of a pure shooter, Johnson is a better all-around player because he can steal the ball and get to the free throw line.

The younger brother of Brooklyn Nets forward Nic Claxton, Chase Claxton, is also visible, possibly starting and receiving some playing time. Though he’s not quite as tall or skilled, he plays a lot like his brother.

Timmerman is not far behind Doucet, Talford, Harrison, and Johnson in terms of how many free throws they make each game. Among the major dangers from deep are Doucet, Johnson, and McMahon.
