McCarthy kept the team together during his five-game absence as they went 4-1 during that span with Rush.
The beginning of Mike McCarthy’s time with the Dallas Cowboys was anything but smooth. McCarthy didn’t really meet the squad until August of 2020 because of the COVID-19 outbreak, which caused significant restrictions throughout the NFL. All communication was conducted digitally. Dak Prescott, the Cowboys’ quarterback, suffered a season-ending ankle injury, which did not help as the team went 6-10 and missed the playoffs for the second straight year.
McCarthy had another opportunity to demonstrate his skills from his time as a player for the Green Bay Packers, where he won a Super Bowl in 2010. The 2021 campaign arrived. The Cowboys’ 12-5 record allowed them to win the NFC East. McCarthy was able to devise a strategy throughout that season to compensate for
They defeated the Minnesota Vikings with backup quarterback Cooper Rush despite Prescott’s absence from the game. Sadly, the Cowboys were eliminated from the playoffs after losing to the San Francisco 49ers at home in the opening round.
McCarthy’s coaching position in Dallas may have been his greatest one in 2022. During the Cowboys’ season-opening loss to the Tampa Buccaneers, Prescott broke his thumb. Nevertheless, McCarthy kept the squad cohesive during Rush’s five-game absence; in his absence, they went 4-1. It is not easy to win so much without your starting quarterback, and Tyron Smith’s limited playing time in the regular season didn’t help. Tyron Smith is a left lineman. After going 12-5 once more and taking Tom Brady’s career to the next level in the postseason, Dallas lost to the 49ers once more a week later.
DeMarvion Overshown, a rookie linebacker, had great expectations for the Cowboys this season, but he tore his ACL in the preseason. Trevon Diggs, an All-Pro cornerback, is also
had the same outcome prior to the Cowboys’ Week 3 game against the Arizona Cardinals. The Cowboys are now 10-4, atop the NFC East, and have a slim chance of finishing as the top seed in the conference despite these significant losses. For the first time since they had a streak that lasted six seasons from 1991 to 1996, Dallas has secured a postseason berth for the third consecutive year.
McCarthy also put his reputation as a play-caller on the line this season after former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, who was the architect of multiple top-ranked offenses during his time with the Cowboys, went to the Los Angeles Chargers. Despite some early offensive struggles, McCarthy has the Cowboys ranked sixth in total offense and second in points per game (30.8) under his command. He’s been known for being great with quarterbacks, and Prescott is playing the best football of his career and is right in the thick of the NFL MVP race. Safe to say, the man just knows how to coach.
