The game may be seen on ABC or ESPN and gets underway at Crypton.com Arena on December 25 at 5:00 p.m. ET/2:00 p.m. PT. The two teams have not often faced off on Christmas Day, despite their shared history. When they last faced one other on that particular day in 2008, it was following a Finals game in which the Lakers ended the Celtics’ lengthy winning run.
The Celtics, headed by Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, are among the best teams in the NBA right now, and the Lakers are looking to turn things around after a run of defeats, so this year’s matchup should be exciting. The Lakers’ victory on Saturday was a big step in the right way, and with so many talented wings on both sides of them, they might match up nicely against the Celtics.

One year after the league’s founding, on Christmas Day 1947, the New York Knicks defeated the Providence Steamrollers in the league’s inaugural game. All of the league’s Christmas Day games have been held since then, with the exception of 1998, when a lockout forced the cancellation of nearly half of the 98/99 season. The NBA’s Christmas Day games, in contrast to the NFL’s customary Thanksgiving Day games, aren’t predetermined; instead, some of the top clubs and players participate. The NBA Finalists from the previous season often square off on Christmas Day.
It’s interesting to note that the NBA is the only major sports league in the bargainingwith a scheduled schedule of games. The MLB is in its offseason, the NFL only plays games if their regular game day falls on Christmas Day, and the NHL has taken a completely different tack by agreeing to a collective bargaining agreement that forbids games from being played on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, or Boxing Day.
The NFL, meanwhile, has stated that it will air three games on Christmas Day this year, which will hurt the NBA’s viewership.
The New York Knicks have played 54 games on Christmas Day overall, more than any other team in the league, for those who enjoy history. During the holiday, they are 22–32. Their record is uneven, though, since they rank second among teams with 22 victories on Christmas Day. They had the most losses, though, with thirty-two. It’s both encouraging and depressing to know that, among players, the late NBA great Kobe Bryant is the one with the most Christmas Day appearances. On Christmas Day, Kobe performed sixteen times; his final performance occurred in 2015.
