The two teams have not often faced off on Christmas Day, despite their shared history. When they last faced one other on that particular day in 2008, it was following a Finals game in which the Lakers ended the Celtics’ lengthy winning run.

All of the league’s Christmas Day games have been held since then, with the exception of 1998, when a lockout forced the cancellation of nearly half of the 98/99 season. The NBA’s Christmas Day games, in contrast to the NFL’s customary Thanksgiving Day games, aren’t predetermined; instead, some of the top clubs and players participate.
