Stanton discusses the scenario when the Yankees passed on Yamamoto.Former Yankee Mike Stanton and USA Today reporter Pete Caldera talked about why New York decided not to give Yoshinobu Yamamoto the same amount of money as the Dodgers on a recent episode of Bleav in The Bronx Podcast. The Dodgers and Mets reportedly made an offer of $325 million to the Japanese great, but the Yankees only made a $300 million offer. Stanton discussed the reasons his previous team declined the other offers. You just paid him more for Gerrit Cole, and he has never thrown a pitch in Major League Baseball. Stanton stated, “I believe that was the Yankees’ sticking point; they paid Cole 324, and it took 325 for Yamamoto to sign with the Dodgers. You have to keep in mind that Gerrit Cole won a Cy Young award, and based on what you’ve told me, Cashman and the Yankees didn’t want to go over 300 or over

that figureStanton also noted that Yamamoto is only five feet ten inches tall; elite pitchers are often more than six feet..After a deal with the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday, Estevan Florial, a former top prospect, was moved to the Rock n’ Roll Capital of the World by the New York Yankees.

Florial’s playing time was already severely restricted because to an outfield player stalemate, thus the writing was clearly on the wall. With the additions of Trent Grisham, Juan Soto, and Alex Verdugo, the impasse grew. Florial’s minor league options had run out, therefore the Bronx Bombers were forced to trade him.

The Yankees received 27-year-old right-hander Cody Morris in exchange, a pitcher with 13 Major League appearances—five of which were starts. In addition to throwing a cutter, curveball, and changeup, his pitch combination also includes a four-seam fastball that tops out at 95 mph.

Morris’s strikeout-to-walk ratio is 1.78 and his adjusted ERA (or ERA+) is somewhat above average at 116, despite his 3.41 ERA in a small sample size of 31.2 innings pitched.

Morris’s minimal statistics on Baseball Savant allows him to be ranked outside of the percentile in most categories, but it still reveals some of his advantages and disadvantages. Morris’s strengths are his velocity and swing-and-miss ability; in 2023, his fastball ranks in the 71st percentile for velocity, and if he had pitched enough to qualify, his whiff percentage (27%) and strikeout rate (23.7%) would have been about league average.

Morris’s propensity to walk hitters and permit hard contact are his main areas of concern. He walked 15.8% of his batters in the previous season, while his hard-hit and barrel percentages were both extremely low at 13% and 52.2%, respectively. Morris’s profile thus demonstrates that he can strike out batters, but his inability to locate the strike zone makes him susceptible to big hits when he attempts to deliver strikes.
