JUSTNOW:Josh McDaniels, a former raider, may be considered for a new head coaching position: Insider
Josh McDaniels was given another opportunity to lead a team when he was hired by the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022. However, this was not the first time he failed to get through a complete season before being sacked.
Although it’s hard to see another team taking a risk on McDaniels as their head coach anytime soon, there is one that is prepared to do so. He might be considered for the head coaching position with the New England Patriots in the event that head coach Bill Belichick decides to depart, according to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport.
“Speculation has focused on [Jerod] Mayo as Belichick’s replacement, should he decide to move on. However, Rapoport and Pelissero noted in a story published on December 30 that “other options—specific coaches with Patriots ties, like Josh McDaniels or Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores—shouldn’t be ruled out.”
Under Belichick, McDaniels has led the Patriots’ offense for a total of 13 years. He was part of the team that won all six of the team’s Super Bowls since 2001. McDaniels is a more sensible cultural fit despite his lack of success in Las Vegas; he has strong ties to New England.
In New England, Could Josh McDaniels Be Successful?
Owner of the Patriots Robert Kraft has been working with Josh McDaniels for many years and is a great supporter of his. Kraft is perhaps the owner who is most inclined to give the coach another chance. The Patriots culture McDaniels has attempted to instill has been a major factor in his struggles in Las Vegas and Denver.
Everyone in the building is from New England, where there are more rules and a focus on doing the little things correctly. After more than 20 years with Bill Belichick, even McDaniels would seem like a breath of new air. McDaniels hasn’t, however, shown that he possesses the necessary skills to lead a team.
He had everything he needed from the Raiders to establish the culture he desired, and he went 9–16 before being let go. Unquestionably, McDaniels is an excellent offensive coordinator, but he appears to have difficulty leading as a head coach. He may only work in New England, so it makes sense that Kraft would want to give him another opportunity. We’ll find out in time.
Reunion with Bill Belichick?
Josh McDaniels and Bill Belichick getting back together seems to be the most likely conclusion. In the last two seasons, neither of them has succeeded independently of the other. The least surprise offseason scenario would be McDaniels returning to be Belichick’s offensive coordinator if he stays in New England.
McDaniels is a strong candidate to be Belichick’s offensive coordinator should he decide to join a different team. Together, the two have won numerous games and enjoy a terrific working relationship. The offenses that Belichick has used when McDaniels hasn’t called the plays have been awful. Belichick is a defensive wizard at his finest when he has a powerful player like McDaniels to completely control the offensive end of the ball. Even while it’s still difficult to picture McDaniels as a head coach, he should be able to land a position as an offensive coordinator unless he wants to take a year off.
