Following a single season with the Chicago Bulls—a team desperately searching for a new Messiah following Michael Jordan’s retirement—Jay Williams’ career was ruined by a terrible motorbike accident. Suddenly, the man who could have had the fastest first step of any point guard in history was unable to do anything for himself, not even walk.

In “Life Is Not An Accident,” Jay Williams tells his narrative, which is both inspirational and devastating, of how, as a young man, he struggled to take charge of his life from his overbearing parents, the rewards and risks of fame and fortune, and the nearly fatal error that almost defined him.

Following ten years of recuperating from his wounds, including rehabilitations, efforts at a comeback, and professional ventures into the shady side of sports agenting — Williams shares, with an uncommon level of candor, his arduous journey to become a college basketball star and the terrible lessons he’s had to learn while trying to piece together his broken adult life.

An extract from Jay Williams’ book “Life Is Not an Accident: A Memoir of Reinvention” is provided below.

I was slowly dying within, from internal hemorrhage. Even my desire to survive was up for debate.

Not too long ago, I had been lying in bed and watching the turquoise waters of Lake Michigan from my window while the sun played with the waves. I met for business with one of my closest pals ever. My plan was to work out at the gym and then maybe have lunch. It was going to be a fantastic day. It was going to be the ideal day.
